The Denouement of Twenty Eighteen

According to Strava, I rode 1,182 miles in 2018. I saw that figure on the 30th of December, but I didn't feel like I had 18 miles in me on Monday the 31st. So instead of a beautiful, even 1,200 miles for the year, I settled for the awkward, uneven number.

I had grand ideas in September as the weather cooled. I was going to ride my bike to work (a seventeen mile round trip) even when others stopped. Cold and wet wasn't going to hinder me... until it did. October and November were miserably low mileage months. I gained back a few pounds and lost the fire I had over the summer to ride forever.

Twenty Nineteen is Going to be Different

I woke up on the morning of January 1st (today!) and had every intention of riding... until I didn't. I want the next year to look different. I don't want to wait until June to ride seriously. I don't want to have to get into shape all summer to ride one century in August. I have bigger goals this year:

• I want to ride a century every summer month--June, July, August, and September
• I want to ride 2500 miles over the course of the year
• I want to ride the Crater Lake Rim when it opens to bikes in September
• I want to do one biking overnight--somehow

Given what I was able to accomplish in 2018, I believe I can do this. I could have ridden another century or two this year, if I'd not had scheduling issues with work travel. So I know I have it in me. It's just getting my mind in shape.

I can do this.
